Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
-
Is it possible to learn to play the piano/keyboard without any prior knowledge of the instrument?Yes, of course! In fact, most of my students began their musical journey as a complete beginner with no previous musical or piano knowledge (with some of them now preparing to appear for digital piano exams). I am more than willing to teach interested students who are complete beginners with no prior music/piano education. My piano lessons are adapted to each student’s skill level, learning pace, specific learning goals and interests, etc. Thus, whether you are a beginner or looking to enhance your piano skills, I am here to guide you on your musical journey & help you unlock your full potential at the piano.
-
What age group of students do you teach? You can learn the piano at any age, as long as you have the dedication & patience for learning. I offer piano lessons to students of all ages, ranging from young kids (minimum age: 5 years) to adults. There is no upper age limit for students!
-
Do you teach students who are outside India (international students/NRIs)?Yes! In fact, the majority of my students reside outside India. I teach students from various countries and time zones. Online lessons eliminate geographical barriers, allowing anyone from anywhere in the world to learn the piano. Hence, all are welcome!

How long does it take to learn the piano/keyboard?The key to learning any performing arts (including music – piano) is consistency, patience, and dedication. There is no universal answer of how long it takes to learn the piano/keyboard, as each student is different in several factors (e.g. age, learning pace, time available for practice, etc). With regular & consistent self-practice by the student, together with good quality musical education provided by the teacher, a student can learn the basics of the piano (including some tunes) within a few months. However, most of my students have been taking piano lessons with me for more than 1 year on average, because they want to further improve their piano skills & techniques, and they find the lessons enjoyable. Unlike academics, music education takes time for every individual to grasp. Hence, a long-term continuous education is recommended for learning the piano.
-
Do you offer a free trial lesson? All interested students are offered a consultation, free of charge, before we begin with the lessons. During this consultation, we will have the opportunity to know each other, address any questions the student or parent may have, and discuss the most effective approach to begin your music education. It may also involve some piano playing, particularly if the student has taken piano/keyboard lessons before, which gives them a chance to showcase what they have already learnt.
-
What is the duration of a class? How many classes do you offer in a month? The duration of each class is 1 hour, conducted once in a week. This provides sufficient time for teaching, playing the instrument, and feedback during the class. There are 4 classes conducted in a month – no classes are taken for the 5th week of the month.
-
Do you offer group lessons or one-on-one sessions?Currently, I offer one-on-one piano lessons for personalised attention and to ensure that the teaching is adapted according to each student’s learning ability, understanding, level, etc. Furthermore, if a student wishes to learn the piano/keyboard along with a family member or friend, we can explore the possibility of organising a group class to facilitate their joint musical learning experience. This can be a fantastic opportunity for collaborative & enjoyable music education.
-
How much practice should I do each day or week?I believe that a good practice session is evaluated based on its quality rather than its quantity. However, it is important to ensure that a regular, consistent practice schedule is followed by all students. With that being said, I recommend beginner level students to practice the piano for a minimum of 15 minutes per day, every day. This can either be done in a single session, or the time can be split into smaller time durations throughout the day. For students who are at intermediate level & above, a longer practice session is required to ensure that they get enough time to work upon their music techniques & piano playing skills. In the case of young children, parents play a vital role in ensuring their child maintains consistent practice & completes homework assignments.
-
Which keyboard/piano is required for the classes?A touch-sensitive keyboard is the minimum requirement. This will allow students to be able to play loud & soft sections, which is extremely important for piano music. However, if you are interested in learning the piano more seriously, are at an intermediate level or higher, or plan to appear for higher grade piano practical exams, a full size (88 key) digital piano with weighted keys or an acoustic/upright piano is required.

How effective are online/virtual/remote piano classes compared to offline (in-person) classes?During the COVID-19 pandemic, both academic & extracurricular education transitioned to the online sphere. Many people took advantage of this period to acquire new hobbies, and a significant number opted for learning a musical instrument. This trend led to the rise of online music lessons. Even beyond the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for online/virtual/remote music lessons continues to grow. The idea of online piano lessons may be unfamiliar to some. Adjusting to this system might require a bit of time, but with the proper motivation, you will discover the benefits that online piano lessons offer. Here are a few of them: Flexibility & convenience – accessible from your home! Learn in a comfortable & familiar environment No need to spend time or money on travelling for lessons Promotes discipline Completely safe & secure Ideal for introverts Enhances independence Reduced likelihood of missing lessons due to factors like illness or commuting difficulties Online/remote/virtual piano classes can be as effective as offline (in-person) classes – their success depends on your commitment & motivation to learn! I firmly believe that the medium of learning (online vs. offline classes) should not be a barrier for music/piano education. My teaching setup ensures that students are able to see the piano keys while I explain a topic or demonstrate a technique. Thus, the quality of music education you receive in my online piano classes is similar to that of offline (in-person) classes, with no compromise.
-
What setup or equipment would I need for online piano lessons? All you need is your music keyboard or piano; a computer or device with a stable internet connection, camera/webcam, and in-built or external microphone; and the Zoom app for the classes.

Do you prepare students for music/piano exams?Absolutely! I am able to prepare students for all grades of Piano exams (not Keyboard exams), including graded Music Theory & Piano Practical exams, conducted by Trinity College of Music, London.
